Creating a table in DreamWeaver is simple just follow the rules of math and you'll do just fine.

The first thing you need to think about when creating a site is how big you would like your pages to be. For ease of use we will be creating a site that is 750 pixels wide.

Inserting tables:
1)
Click the "Insert Table" button in DreamWeaver.
2)

This will bring up the "Table Properties" dialog box. In this box you have the option of editing the following properties.

  • Rows
  • Columns
  • Width
  • Border
  • Cell Padding
  • Cell Spacing
In the "Table Properties" dialog box we are going to create the shell that will house many other tables. This first shell will be 1 Row, 1 Column, Width of 750 PIXELS, 0 Border, Cell Padding 0, and Cell Spacing 0. Once you have done that click OK.
3)
Choose where you would like that table aligned. Weather it's left justified, center justified or right justified. You can adjust this by selecting the table you have just created then going to the "Properties" Dialog box and selecting Align (Default, Left, Center or Right).
4)
Click inside the table you have just aligned. make sure the cursor is blinking inside this table.
5)
Click the "Insert Table" button.
This table will help you determine what your site is going to look like. Most sites have a "Header" a "Left Side Navigation" and a "Body." To Create this look continue.
6)
Create your table with 2 Rows, 2 Columns Width 100% (not pixels we want this table to expand the entire distance of our already created 750 pixel table). Border 0, Cell Padding 0, Cell Border 0.
7)
Click OK
Since our header should go all the way across the 750 pixel table we are going to need to "Merge" the 2 top cells into 1 cell.
8)
Click in the right top cell and drag to the left top cell. (You'll notice that a black outline shows you the 2 cells have been selected.
9)
Go to "Modify" in the top menu of DreamWeaver.
10)
Go to "Table."
11)
Go to "Merge Cells"
This will combine the 2 cells into one cell that stretches 750 pixels long.
Now you need to determine how far across you would like to make your navigation. Just to be safe you might want to stay within the boundaries of 200 pixels or smaller. Lets just make our navigation 150 pixels wide. You do this by the following.
12)
Click in the Second Row left hand side cell.
13)
Go to the "Properties" dialog box.
!4)
Change the W to 150

This will change the width of that cell to 150 pixels.

Knowing that you have just created a space for your side navigation that is 150 pixels wide you now only have 600 pixels for the body of the site. Also keep this in mind for when you are creating your Navigation in Illustrator, PhotoShop, Fireworks or any other graphics program.

Now that you have the basic structure of your site down in tables you will need to repeat these steps as necessary to create other tables for images and body copy or Flash movies.

*Just remember if you are creating tables in side of other tables that you need to be aware of using either pixels or percents. If you are using pixels then remember you cannot go above 750 pixels wide. If you do then your original table will loose it's shape.
