12VDC CONVERSION FOR PS2

Everyone wants to put a PS2 in their car, so I researched the WEB, and found out how to do it, with pics and digrams.

C1     = 0.1mF capacitor (noise filteing)
C2     = 4700mF capacitor
D1-4 = 1N4002 for power direction (4)
U1     = LM1084 12V, 5A, Low dropout, TO220 package

The voltage regulator was chosen because it satisfies a couple requirements.  The PS2 requires about 3A of current, much more than a standard LM7812(at 1.5A peak) can handle.  The low dropout feature is really nice since the car's battery varies from 12-14.7V.  The TO220 package is smaller than using an equivalent TO-3 part.

First, here is the Schematic  This circut is placed on the PS2 power supply board.  The B+ and GND wires go to an external plug.   You can wire the Male end to a Cig. Ligher plug, or directly to a switched power source.  The female and  goes to the circuit, of course.

Detailed instructions:
Take the PS2 apart, the screws are under the rubber pads and such.  You can figure that much out.

Take out the power regulation board.  This is held in by four screws.  There is also a 120V power connector for the main power button.  Be careful with, and when handeling the fan, the wires are very thin (~30AWG each).  The modification is to this power regulation board itself.  The regulator, a LM1084, is of TO220 package, and a heatsink is added.

The DIODES keep the original voltages (when plugged into a wall outlet) from going back through your new car 12V regulator, so you have a completely portable unit.

Diodes were also added, replacing two of the legs of the power connector of the power board.   The stripe of the diodes faces UP to the connector, not DOWN towards the board.  The diodes from the LM package go to the TOP of the diodes on the connector, NOT below the diodes

Here are some Finished product shots. NOT seen at the web site I provided on ASOG.

Here is the connector OUTSIDE the PS2.

You can plug that into the male connector, then into the Cig. lighter, or directly to a swicthed 12V supply.

I hope this helped.  There is a place that sells direct PS2 12V regulated power boards, specifically designed for use in cars with 24V and 12V systems.  They are basically the SAME type of corcuit here, but it completely replaces the PS2's power board with theirs.  You can fabricate your own with THESE parts!

I will add to this page as I find more options for 12V use!
