Mitsubishi Recalls 1.35 Million Cars Worldwide
February 16, 2001

Mitsubishi says it is recalling 1.35 million vehicles, including thousands of cars being recalled for the second time in the United States and Japan, The Associated Press reported.
The story said that the $146 million recall is a "serious setback for the Japanese automaker," which last summer admitted it had been systematically hiding driver complaints for more than 20 years.
Japan's Transport Ministry said Mitsubishi submitted plans to recall 401,106 vehicles, including 110,000 cars that had been subject to a previous recall last year.

Mitsubishi Motors President Takashi Sonobe added the company expected to recall 950,000 cars in the United States, although it had yet to work out details with its U.S. subsidiary.
"We must again apologize to the public for diminishing their trust in us," Sonobe said at a news conference. "We will take various steps to make sure that this never occurs again."

This is not specific on which cars are specifically being recalled - yet.

Mitsubishi (MMC) recalls more faulty cars, apologizes for slipshod checkups

The U.S. recall is for loose parts on a joint in the front suspension that may cause the Mitsubishi Galant, Eclipse, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger sedans to stall, MMC said.

The sedans were recalled once last summer. In Japan, 232,514 sedans produced from 1992 to 2001 are being recalled for the second time for the same problem.

The $146 million recall is another serious setback for the Japanese automaker, which acknowledged last summer it had been systematically hiding driver complaints for more than 20 years.

"It was truly a shoddy setup that deserves criticism," Sonobe said of having to recall the vehicles a second time.

Akira Okamoto, executive officer in charge of quality, said officials checking for defects the first time mistakenly assumed they only arose on the assembly line.
