"Sweet sounding" Steve is our be-mulletted Flugel player. He
is one of our most experienced performers, although
his youthful looks belie his real age (he is 54). A regular soloist, Steve
has bewitched audiences and adjudicators alike with his delightful rendition
of "Aranjuez Mon Amour".
His film-star looks have earned him a small band of followers who regularly
attend Carlton Brass functions just to get a glimpse of Steve and his comedy
waistcoats. Marge, an 82 year-old founder member of the self-named "Slappers
Club", has a tendency to dampen her nether-regions whenever Steve plays long
notes with vibrato. This small band of octogenarians are often seen with
Steve Mercs branded T-shirts and look-alike see-through moustaches.
Steve has graced some decent bands in his time, most famously William
Davis, and has now taken on the mantle of guiding Carlton Brass onwards
and upwards. A beguiling performer of real style, he is one of the leading
players in the band, and an example to all the youngsters. If only to stop
them getting crap haircuts and wearing sweatpants to rehearsals!
