Our last stop on our trip was Guilin, near the Yellow Sea in the southern part of China. The temperature took another jump up, with the humidity keeping in step. A sad allusion of to the summer I have to look forward to in Korea. I am not excited! But the stops were good in Guilin, moving away from the history and cities of China and into it's natural beauty. The first stop was some of the spectacular caves in the mountains around Guilin. Rocky peaks lift all through out the city of Guilin...it was quite neat and the smallest city we visited...around a million people. After emerging from the cave we took a boat up and down the river followed by a short bus ride to a chair lift to the top of one of the mountains. Then we went back into town to check out a couple of the river side parks before being whisked back to the airport for a late flight back to Beijing, an early morning, and the return to Korea.
To get from the parking the lot to the caves, you could: A) walk (boring) or B) take these little cart things. I was happy our group hadn't opted for the boring part. Although my mother was really worried about it, since there was the standard warning sign of death and danger, even though they were the tamest things possible. Disney world is scarier, even the Tiki room...talking bird, aye-yie-yie, if that don't get to you...nothing will..

The caves were enormous, with great lights all over the place, and the ever present sound of running water, from the river that made of this possible. We actually got a boat ride through part of the caves, with lights we could shine into the darkness to see what ever could see. It was a neat place. I was going to bring my tripod with me into the cave, but decided I wouldn't need it in the end. That was a mistake. I ended up put my camera on rocks and rails.

More of the rocks.
The best picture from the caves, by far!
More of the caves, with the soliloquies of our group on the left.
On the far side of the caves, where boats waited to take us on a gentle cruise up the river...not to mention drinking. Although I didn't have any. I drink at all while I was in China.

These were two old friends that were taking the trip together. They became my parents drinking buddies at meal time. We always had 2 tables at each restaurant. With most of the women going to one table and these guys, Red Shirt who you saw with me earlier and his brother and mother, and a few other regulars at our table. And man, did they and my parents drink.

Life on the river.

What looks pretty to us, is just graffiti to others. It's kind of strange seeing someone's name carved into a tree...or perhaps obscenities, and think they are pretty. But I liked them...but then again I like people carving the names into to trees with hearts and things around them too. Just call me sentimental.

My parents sitting and waiting on a bridge that went over the danger-free cart things. We had to wait a short while for some carts to be sent to us, since we caught them part way down the track, and not at one of the end stations. It was a nice stop, except that everyone was swarmed by people selling things.
The rice paddies of China...stretching along forever next to our bus.
The ride up on the chair lift was a fairly long one. Every time we reached a crest in the hill, we thought it was going to the top, only to find more hill looming in front of us. It was a cloudy day, and when we were about 1/2 way up, it began to rain. It stopped as soon as we got to the top, only start again as soon as we were on the lift, going back down. Damn clouds, they get you every time.

My dad, drooled when he saw things. And to think, only a schedule and his clubs being back in Korea, stood between him and golf. I could have done it.
This was on the very peak of the mountain...and short ways above the station where were dropped off. But the path up to it was blocked off.
Me on the top. Look at me, I'm positively glowing, almost angelic.
This was back in the city. You can see most of our tour group in this picture, everyone you see was with us, minus the people on the boats. The drinking buddies are on the left, and red shirt and his mother closer to the right. The rock in the back was suppose to look like an elephant, with the part behind the arch being it's hind legs and things...but I really don't see it and think it's just bullshit. Lots of people tried to point it out, but they seemed to be really stretching a lot of nothing to get to it.

The second part, this one, had a big rock spire type thing you could climb to the top off and look out over the city. So here ya go. You didn't even have to do the climbing. Not to bad...except it was hot and humid. I ran most of the way up. By the top, my shirt was plastered to my back.

The river was very pretty, with it weaving between islands. Although I definitely wouldn't drink it and would strong consider before touching it.
And yet a different direction from the top.
This was the garden at the base of the rock spire. A fitting farewell and fanfare, with the balloons rising to the heavens and the colourful hearts thanking you for coming and wishing you a safe journey back from whence you came.
