ALUMINIUM OXIDE

Aluminium oxide is a synthetic compound used for general wood­ working. The cloth backed is most used for belt sanding. Also obtainable in grades up to 600. Available in 'dry rubbing' papers (white coating on the grain minimises loading).
SILICON CARBIDE

1200 – super fine, to
60 - coarse
Used wet with water or oil to smooth coats on wood, metal etc. For sanding floors, glass or plastic. The sharpest of the most commonly used abrasives.
EMERY
Cloth
00 – fine to 3 - coarse
Particles of emery bonded to the backing, for jobs such as light metal polishing, removing rust and corrosion. Use dry, using progressively finer grades as you work.
SHARKSKIN
Metal
Very coarse
Steel sheet has sharp jagged teeth punched out of the surface. Used for rough work such as paint removal or keying surfaces.
TUNGSTEN CARBIDE

Fine, medium, coarse
Available in flat sheets for hand sanding shaped sheets for use with block backing and shaped discs for power sanding. Use for stripping paint, sanding back timber etc. Longer lasting than sandpaper, also available in flat file form
