TIMBERS FOR FLOOR JOISTS AND BEARERS:
As a general rule no discrimination is made in regard to the species of hardwood used for this purpose, and mixed hardwoods (which may include any of the hardwoods listed) are the general rule Under the Timber Marketing Act this timber may not contain more than 25 per cent of its perimeter showing sapwood susceptible to Lyetid borers.

Special care should be taken to select straight-grained timber when using brush box (Tristania conferta) and turpentine (Syncarpia glomutifera).
TIMBERS FOR WALL AND ROOF FRAMING:
The same timbers as listed above may be used, with the addition of radiata pine (Pinus radiata).
TIMBERS FOR FLOORING:
For clear-finished floors, colour and wearing qualities are the criteria. The Timber Marketing Act prohibits the use of timber containing sapwood susceptible to Lyctid borers.
1. For clear-finished flooring:

2. For covered floors:
For covered floors and in industrial applications where appearance is not important a mixture of hardwoods is often used. The softer timbers such as radiata pine, slash pine and hoop pine are also very suitable for covered floors.
3. For heavy duty floors (industrial or public buildings).
Brush box (Tristania conferta) is particularly suitable for the purpose. Also recommended are:

Species used in this application need to machine well and have good paint holding characteristics. Sapwood susceptible to Lyetid borer attack is prohibited.

Interior joinery required to be clear finished is selected for beauty of figure and colour and the ability to provide a smooth finish. For other interior joinery freedom from defects, medium density and ease of working are sufficient. The use of timber containing sapwood susceptible to Lyctid borer is prohibited by the Timber Marketing Act.

TIMBERS FOR EXTERIOR JOINERY:
Timbers used for exterior furniture, trellises, gates etc, need to have a high durability. It is recommended that the use of timber containing sapwood be avoided, unless it is preservatived, with approved chemicals of appropriate concentration. Timbers recommended for sills could be considered, in addition, radiata pine and sassafras would be suitable if preservatived adequately.
Timber for external trim on dwellings needs to have good stability and freedom from surface defects which could affect the durability of finishes. Clear softwoods are usually demanded by builders. Clear radiata pine, preservative treated, is suitable. The imported western red cedar, redwood and Douglar are commonly used.
